オリン・キープニュース

オリン・キープニュース（Orrin Keepnews、1923年3月2日 - 2015年3月1日 ）は、ブロンクス[1]出身の作家・音楽プロデューサー。リバーサイド・レコード（1953年-1964年）などのレーベルで、数多くの作品に関わったことにより広く知られている。

生涯

プロデューサー業

1943年、コロンビア大学を卒業し、英文学学位取得[2]。その後、第二次世界大戦末期の東京大空襲に参加した。

1946年、コロンビア大学院を経て、サイモン・シャスター出版社で編集者を務め、コロンビアの同級生ビル・グラウアー (Bill Grauer)が1948年にオーナーになった雑誌『The Record Changer』でも活躍した。

1952年、グラウアーとともにRCAビクター傘下のXレーベルの再発シリーズを担当し、翌年にふたりはリバーサイド・レコードを設立した。当初、このレーベルはスイング・ジャズの再発盤ばかり出していたが、ピアノのランディ・ウェストンと契約し、ようやく同時代のシーンに興味を抱いた。

1955年、プレスティッジ・レコードとの契約が切れたセロニアス・モンクを獲得したのを皮切りに、ビル・エヴァンス、キャノンボール・アダレイとナット・アダレイ、ウェス・モンゴメリー、ジョニー・グリフィン、ジミー・ヒースなどと契約し、プリスティッジやブルーノートの対抗馬となる。1961年にはビル・エヴァンス・トリオのアルバム『サンデイ・アット・ザ・ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガード』と『ワルツ・フォー・デビイ』をライブ録音した。

この時期、グラウアーはビジネスに専念していたが、1963年末に心臓発作で急死。リバーサイドも1964年夏に倒産した。

リバーサイド倒産後

キープニュースはピアニストのディック・カッツとともにマイルストーン・レコードを1966年に発足し、マッコイ・タイナー、ジョー・ヘンダーソン、リー・コニッツ、ゲイリー・バーツと契約した。

1972年、サンフランシスコに引っ越し、リバーサイドの権利を買ったファンタジー・レコードでジャズのA&Rを担当した。マイルストーンもファンタジーが買収し、リバーサイドで一緒だったソニー・ロリンズと契約し、リバーサイドの再発盤を連発した。ビル・エヴァンスがファンタジーと契約したのはこの頃である。

1980年にキープニュースは「どんな最高の条件であれ、もう誰かのために働くのは嫌だ」と話し、フリーランスに戻った。

1985年、ランドマーク・レコードを設立し[3][4]、クロノス・カルテットがビル・エヴァンスやモンクの曲を録音し、ボビー・ハッチャーソンは後期の傑作アルバム群を録音した。1993年、ランドマーク・レコードはミューズ・レコードとなる。

CD時代にも再発盤を担当。デューク・エリントンの24枚組CDボックス『RCA Centennial set』を1999年に制作。リバーサイドの『Keepnews Editions series』も担当。

私生活

ルシル・カウフマン (Lucile Kaufman)と1948年に結婚。1989年に妻が亡くなり、衣装デザインのマーサ・イーガン (Martha Egan)と再婚。

息子のピーター・キープニュースは「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」紙の編集者で、ジャズなどについての本をいくつか出している[5]。

もう一人の息子、デヴィッド・キープニュースはニューヨーク市立大学ハンター校で看護学を教えている。

2015年3月1日に91歳で死去[2]。

受賞

ビル・エヴァンスの楽曲「Re: Person I Knew」はオリン・キープニュースへの感謝の曲で、タイトルがオリン・キープニュースのアナグラムになっている[6]。

『The "Interplay" Sessions』（ビル・エヴァンス、1984年）と『Thelonious Monk: The Complete Riverside Recordings』（1988年）でグラミー賞を受賞。

2004年、Trustees Award受賞。

2011年、NEAジャズ・マスターズと$25,000（250万円）を獲得した[7][8]。
