ガト

ガトヘブライ語: גַּתラテン語: Geth)は、鉄器時代のペリシテ人のペンタポリスの5つの都市の1つである。この都市はフィリスティアの北東部、ユダ王国との国境に近い場所にあった。ガトはヘブライ語聖書でしばしば言及されており、その存在はエジプトの碑文によって確認されている。青銅器時代にはすでに重要な都市であり、アマルナ文書の中で、シュワルダタとアブディ・アシュタルティの2人によって統治されたギムテ/ギントゥと書かれている都市であると考えられている[1][2][3]。アマルナ文書にはギンティ・キルミルという別のガトも書かれている[4]

テル・エス・サフィ遺跡

ガトの場所として最も支持されている場所は、テル・ザフィト国立公園にあるテル・エス・サフィ遺跡(Tell es-Safi)であるが[5]、都市の名前を示す石碑はまだ発見されていない。考古学者は、紀元前10世紀から9世紀にかけて、ここが南レバント最大の都市だったと考えている。最近の発掘で、紀元前9世紀後半にこの場所が包囲され、その後破壊されたことを示す証拠が発見された。この破壊は、アラム・ダマスカスのハザエルによるこの場所の占領について言及した聖書の一節に関連している可能性がある[6][7]
