研究分野は、心の哲学、形而上学(自由意志、汎心論、心身問題、自己など)、ジョン・ロック、デイヴィッド・ヒューム、イマヌエル・カント、フリードリヒ・ニーチェら[2]。

長年、『The Times Literary Supplement』の顧問編集者、『The Observer』、『The Sunday Times』、『The Independent』、『Financial Times』、『The Guardian』などで常連書評家として活躍している。

父親は哲学者のピーター・ストローソン。

現在、テキサス大学オースティン校哲学科で教鞭をとっている。レディング大学、ニューヨーク市立大学、オックスフォード大学の教員を歴任した。

略歴

オックスフォード大学の哲学者P.F.ストローソンの長男として生まれた。

オックスフォード大学のドラゴン・スクールで教育を受け(1959-65年)、ウィンチェスター・カレッジへの奨学金を獲得した(1965-68年)。

16歳で学校を去り、Aレベルを修了してケンブリッジ大学のトリニティ・ホールへの入学資格を得た。

ケンブリッジ大学で東洋学(1969-71)、社会・政治学(1971-72)、道徳科学(1972-73)を学んだ後、オックスフォード大学に移り、1977年に哲学の学士号(BPhil)を、1983年に哲学の博士号(DPhil)を取得する。また、パリ高等師範学校とパンテオン・ソルボンヌ大学でフランス政府奨学生(1977-78年)として1年間オーディトール・リブル(聴講生)として過ごした。

1979年から2000年までオックスフォード大学で教鞭をとり、最初は複数のカレッジで俸給講師を務め、1987年からはジーザス・カレッジのフェロー兼チューターとして教壇に立つ。

1993年には、キャンベラの社会科学研究所の客員研究員も務めた。また、ニューヨーク大学(1997年)、ラトガース大学(2000年)、マサチューセッツ工科大学(2010年)、パリの社会科学高等研究院(2012年)で客員教授を歴任した。

2011年には、プリンストン大学人文科学評議会オールド・ドミニオン・フェローを務めた(2011年)。2000年、哲学教授としてレディング大学に移り、2004年から2007年までニューヨーク市立大学大学院センターで哲学の卓越教授を兼任した。

2012年、テキサス大学オースティン校の哲学科の新講座の教授として着任した[3]。

哲学

自由意志

自由意志の議論において、ストローソンは、決定論が真であろうとなかろうと、根源的には自由意志は不可能であると主張している。彼は自身の立場を「基本的議論」と呼び、究極的には誰も自分の行動に対して道徳的な責任を負わないこと、したがって、通常私たちが考える意味での自由意志を人は持たないことを示そうとしている。基本的議論を最も単純な形で示すと次のようになる。

  1. どのような状況でも、人がある行為を行うのは、その人のあり方(the way you are)の故にである。
  2. 人が自らの行為について究極的な責任を負うためには、少なくともある重要な心的側面において、その人のあり方に究極的な責任を持たなければならない。
  3. しかし、人はどのような意味においても、その人のあり方について究極的な責任を持つことはできない。
  4. したがって、人は自分の行為について究極的な責任を持つことはできない。[4]

この議論は、アルトゥール・ショーペンハウアーが『根拠律の四つの根について』で述べた立場に似ており、E・F・J・ペインは、「具体的な行為は必然的に、所与の性格と動機に継続して生じるとする動機の法則」[5]であると要約している。

汎心論

ストローソンは、「実在的物理主義」(あるいは「実在的一元論」)と呼ぶ立場が汎心論を含意すると主張している[6]。彼は「実在的物理主義者として、私は心的/経験的なものは物理的だという立場を取る」と述べている[6]:7。彼は自分の立場を支持するものとして、物理学者アーサー・エディントンを引用している。「もし私たちが指標を読み取るスケジュールをある種の背景に組み込まねばならないのだとしたら、少なくとも、背景の意味について私たちが受け取った唯一のヒントを受け入れるだろう。すなわち、その背景が心的活動としてそれ自身を現すことができる性質を持っているということを」[6]:11。『Journal of Consciousness Studies』の編集者アンソニー・フリーマンによれば、汎心論は多くの人々から「単なる狂気か、さもなければアニミズムや迷信に戻る道筋」と見なされている[6]:1。しかし、西洋の思想においては汎神論の長い伝統がある[7]。
