コミックス・スタディーズ

コミックス・スタディーズ: comics studies)とは、コミック(漫画)を対象とする学術研究の分野である。英語圏でコミックは場合によって「グラフィックノベル」「シークエンシャル・アート」などと呼び分けられるため分野の名にも幅がある[1][2]。かつてコミックは瑣末なポップカルチャーテクストとして学術界から軽視されていたが、現在記号学美学社会学コンポジション研究カルチュラル・スタディーズのような分野の研究者はコミックを真剣な研究に値する複雑なテクストだと見なしている。

コミックを芸術作品として批評的にアプローチするための理論、ならびにヒストリオグラフィ(コミック史)の構築が分野の主体であり、制作技術は含まれない[3]。コミック理論の近接領域に、存在論[4][5]認識論[6]美学[7]の側面からコミックそのものや、コミックと他の芸術形式との関係、コミックにおける文章と画像の関係を研究するコミックの哲学がある[4]。コミックス・スタディーズはコミック作品やコミックというメディアを分析・評価するコミック評論とも密接なかかわりがある[8]

理論化

コミックを正当な芸術様式として扱った著作は古くから散発的に存在しており、ギルバート・セルディーズによる The 7 Lively Arts(1924年)、マーティン・シェリダンによる Comics and Their Creators(1942年)、デイヴィッド・クンズルによる The Early Comic Strip: Narrative Strips and Picture Stories in the European Broadsheet from c. 1450 to 1825(1973年)が挙げられる。しかし、現代の北米英語圏にコミックス・スタディーズの学術分野が出現したのは、ウィル・アイズナーComics and Sequential Art(1985年)およびスコット・マクラウドUnderstanding Comics(1993年。日本語版『マンガ学 マンガによるマンガのためのマンガ理論』1998年)の刊行を端緒とする。ヨーロッパにおいてはロラン・バルト(1964年の論説「イメージの修辞学」など)[9]ウンベルト・エーコ(1964年の書籍 Apocalittici e integrati など)[10]のような記号学者による先駆的な仕事にまで遡ることができる。バルトらの研究はコミックス・セミオティクス(記号学)の総合的な体系を構築する最初の試みでもあった[11]

より近年には認知科学者がコミック分析の主流を占めるようになってきた。その第一人者であるニール・コーンは、言語学の道具立てによってコミックの基盤にある「視覚言語」の理論的枠組みを精緻化し、それを実際の読解で検証するために認知神経科学の実験手法を用いた。この研究により、脳が言語を処理する方法とシークエンシャルな画像を処理する方法が似ていることが示唆されている[12]。コーンの説は一般に受け入れられているわけではなく、ティエリ・グルンステン、ハンナ・ミオドラグ、バーバラ・ポステマらは異なる見解を持っている。

コミックの定義

「コミックとは … ある時は四本脚、ある時は二本脚、空を飛ぶと思えば飛ばないこともある … コミックそのものと同じくらい錯綜したメタファーを使うなら、コミックを定義するには謎に包まれたゴルディアスの結び目を両断する必要がある」

文学や映画を定義するのが困難であるのと同様に[14]、コミックというメディアをどう定義するかはコンセンサスが得られておらず[15]、これまでに提唱された定義は膨大な例外に直面してきた[16]ロドルフ・テプフェール[17]R・C・ハービーウィル・アイズナー[18]デイヴィッド・キャリアー[19]アラン・レイ[15]、ローレンス・グローヴらの理論家は言葉と画像の組み合わせを定義の中心に置いたが[20]、コミックの歴史には言葉を用いない「サイレント・コミック」の重要作品が存在する[16]。ほかにティエリ・グルンステン[20]やスコット・マクラウドらは画像のシークエンス性(一連に並べられていること)が最大の特徴だとしている[21]。20世紀後半になると、異なる文化圏が互いのコミック文化を発見したり、忘れられていたコミックの表現形式が歴史の中から発掘されたり、あるいは新しい表現形式が生まれてきたことで、コミックの定義はさらに困難になった[22]

コンポジション研究

コンポジション研究(米国で修辞学から発展した作文の研究[23])の分野では、コミック理論の発展を受けてコミックやグラフィックノベルへの関心が高まっている。またコンポジション研究の中でマルチモダリティヴィジュアル・レトリックが注目されていることもある。コンポジション研究者はコミックが洗練されたテクストであり、そこでは複雑なリテラシーがはたらいていると見なしている。

ギュンター・クレスはマルチモダリティを「複数の記号論的なモードを用いて記号論的な産物もしくは出来事をデザインすること、またそれらのモードの組み合わせ方」と定義した[24]。また別の場所ではシンプルに「複数の記号論的コードによって意味が作られている何らかのテクスト」と言っている[25]

クリスティー・S・フレッケンシュタインは画像と言葉の関係を「互いが互いを規定し、互いの中に浸出している」と述べ、その関係を「imageword(→画像語)」と呼んだ。フレッケンシュタインは「imageword」が「画像と言葉の融合による読み書きの複視、リテラシーの複視」をもたらすと書いている[26]

デイル・ジェイコブズはコミックの読解が「マルチモーダルなリテラシー、つまりマルチリテラシー」の一形態なのであって「活字の読解の程度が低いもの」ではないと述べている[27]。また教育者にとっては活字のみならず複数のモダリティへと関心を広げるためにコミックが役立つという[28]。ジェイコブズは教育者に対し、生徒が複数のモダリティを効果的に用いるスキルを習得できるような教育を行うよう勧めている。

コミックス・ヒストリオグラフィ

コミックス・ヒストリオグラフィはコミックが独自の芸術形式として固有の文化的地位を占めるに至った歴史的プロセス(漫画の歴史[3])を対象とする研究である[29]。分野の一つに近代以前のシークエンシャル・アート(一連の画像による表現様式)の研究がある。スコット・マクラウドなどはエジプト絵画先コロンブス期アメリカの絵文書がコミックやシークエンシャル・アートの最初の形態だと見なしている[30]。そのほか、20世紀に登場したコミック読者のサブカルチャーや、コミックブックへの熱烈な関心を意味するコミックフィリア(愛好者はコミックフィル[31]やコミックス・バフと呼ばれる[32][33]の研究も一つの分野を成している。

コミックス・ヒストリオグラフィの探究は米国で1940年代にトマス・クレイヴン、マーティン・シェリダン、コールトン・ウォーらによって先鞭がつけられた。学界に根付き始めたのは1960年代半ばにジュールズ・ファイファーThe Great Comic Book Heroes を出版してからで、1970年代にはモーリス・ホーンジム・ステランコロン・グーラートビル・ブラックビアードマーティン・ウィリアムズらの研究によって分野として確立した。1990年代後半には米国コミックの100周年を記念した書籍の出版がブームになった。そのほか重要な書き手としてはウィル・ジェイコブズジェラード・ジョーンズリック・マーシャル、R・C・ハービーが挙げられる。

教育機関

ソル・M・デイヴィッドソンは1959年にニューヨーク大学に提出した博士論文 Culture and the Comic Strips によって史上初めてコミック研究で博士号を取得した[34][35]

コミックス・スタディーズは各国の研究機関に正式に取り入れられることが増えてきている。北米の例にはオハイオ州立大学[36]フロリダ大学[37]トロント大学ミシサガ校[38]カリフォルニア大学サンタクルーズ校がある[39]。正規の学位課程ではなくとも、コミックやグラフィックノベルを主に扱う科目を設置している教育機関は珍しくない[40]。2012年、オレゴン大学が米国初の「コミックス・アンド・カートゥーン・スタディーズ」副専攻課程を設立した[41][42]。プログラムの長はベンジャミン・ソーンダースが務めている。

英国でもコミック研究への関心は高まっており、スコットランドのダンディー大学に研究拠点としてスコティッシュ・センター・フォー・コミックス・スタディーズ (SCCS) が設立されている[43]。英国ティーズサイド大学は2014年からコミックとグラフィックノベル学の学士課程を[44]、2018年からは修士課程を設置している[45]。教員にはフィオヌアラ・ドラン[46]ジュリアン・ローレンスコン・クリソーリスナイジェル・キッチング、タラ・マキネニーのような著名なコミック専門家が名を連ねている[47]ランカスター大学は2015年からコミックス・スタディーズの博士号を授与している[48]。同大学はフランス人のコミック研究者ブノワ・ペータースロラン・バルトの弟子)を英国初のコミック学教授に任じた[49]

学会

学術機関に研究組織が設置されるのに加えて学際的な学会の活動も盛んである。グラフィック・ナラティヴやシークエンシャル・アートを専門とする米国初の研究団体は2014年に設立されたコミックス・スタディーズ・ソサエティ (CSS) である[50]。英語圏の団体にはほかにスコティッシュ・センター・フォー・コミックス・スタディーズ (SCCS)、ブリティッシュ・コンソーシアム・オブ・コミックス・スカラーズ(BCCS、2012年にポール・デイヴィーズが設立)[51]カナディアン・ソサエティ・フォー・ザ・スタディ・オブ・コミックス(CSSC、2010年10月にシルヴァン・ローが設立)がある[52]。CSSCは英語とフランス語のバイリンガルなコミュニティで、カナダ人研究者が中心だが他国の会員も受け入れている。CSSC の活動の一つにトロント・コミック・アーツ・フェスティヴァルの一環で行われる学術会議がある[53]

コミックス・スタディーズ・ソサエティ

2014年11月、カリフォルニア州立大学ノースリッジ校のチャールズ・ハットフィールド教授は国際会議インターナショナル・コミック・アーツ・フォーラムにおいて、コミックの批評研究を発展させることを目指す大学人、在野研究者、教員、学生を広く受け入れる学際団体「コミックス・スタディーズ・ソサエティ (CSS)」の設立を呼びかけた[54][55][56]

コミックの研究図書館であるビリー・アイルランド・カートゥーン図書館・博物館で行われた会議ではCSSの初代執行委員が選出され、同会の主な目的が「コミックの批評研究を発展させ、コミック教育を向上させ、コミックの世界についてオープンで継続的な対話を行っていく」と定められた。CSSは2018年から年次大会を開催している[50][56][57][58]

学術大会

様々な分野の学会でコミックを扱った研究発表が見られるようになり、コミック研究を専門とする学会も一般的になってきている。例としてはオハイオ州立大学で定期開催されるフェスティヴァル・オブ・カートゥーン・アート[64]ボーリング・グリーン州立大学のコミックス・イン・ポピュラー・カルチャー・カンファレンスがある[65]フロリダ大学ではカンファレンス・オン・コミックス・アンド・グラフィックノベルという年次大会が開催されている[66]ミシガン州立大学コミックス・フォーラムは研究者とコミック関係者が集まる年次大会である。開催地不定の定期大会で主要なものには、米国ポップカルチャー学会(コミックアート/コミックス領域)や国際ユーモア学会の大会がある[64]

1995年にジョージタウン大学で最初に開催された国際コミック・アーツ・フォーラム[67]はコミック研究の学術運動として最初期のものだと言われている[68]。ドイツの Gesellschaft für Comicforschung(ComFor、コミックス・スタディーズ学会)は2006年から年次大会を開催している[69]コミックス・アーツ・カンファレンスは1992年からサンディエゴ・コミコン・インターナショナルワンダーコンと共同で定期的に開催されている。その他重要な学会としては、2010年からイギリスの研究者によって運営されているインターナショナル・グラフィックノベルズ・アンド・コミックス・カンファレンスの年次大会がある。この大会はより歴史の長いインターナショナル・バンド・デシネ・ソサエティの学会と共催されてきた。海外のコミックを研究する英国の団体コミックス・フォーラムもまた2009年の第1回以来リーズ中央図書館で年次大会を行っている[70]
