ジョン・コバール

イワン・コバール (父親の名前による) はオーストリアのリンツに生まれた。コバールが10才の時に一家はカナダに移住し、オタワに定住した[4]。

コバールは1960年代の始めにロンドンで俳優として短期間仕事をした。彼は雑誌、葉書、写真、映画に関する品々などの収集マニアだった。1950年代後半にモントリオールで偶然マレーネ・ディートリヒと出会ったことが、コバールのハリウッド黄金時代への情熱を育んだ。1964年から彼はニューヨークのBBCで仕事をした時の人脈でハリウッド映画に関する写真を集め始め[4]、無声映画時代から1960年頃までのおよそ4,500枚を収集した[5]。しかしそのコレクションは価値が低かったので、破棄された。

30冊も本を書いたコバールは、1974年にロンドンのヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館で、ハリウッド映画に関する写真の初めての展示会を開催した[6]。 批評家のジョン・ラッセル・テイラーは、コバールの映画研究への貢献は「ユニーク」だと評した[1]。コバールは51才の時にロンドンでHIV関連肺炎により死亡した。

彼の最新の伝記『デミルの失われた世界』 (The Lost World of DeMille) が2019年にミシシッピ大学出版から出版された[7]。

コバールが彼のコレクションを寄贈したジョン・コバール財団は、1992年末に登録慈善団体として設立され[8]、1993年から2002年までポートレート写真部門の賞を毎年授与していた[9]。

ロンドンとニューヨークに分けて置かれているコレクションには、20万枚以上の画像がある。コレクションはまたジョン・コバールが始めた展示会を継続し、カンヌ国際映画祭や日本の有名百貨店の依頼でたびたび開催されている[10]。2015年には東京でコレクション展が開催された[11]。
