ジョン・バームガードナー
生涯
バームガードナーは1968年にテキサス工科大学で理学学士号を、1970年にプリンストン大学で理学修士号を、1983年にカリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校で地球物理学と宇宙物理学のPh.D.を取得した[3][4]。卒業後はロスアラモス国立研究所に入所し、2002年に創造論研究所の研究員となった[1][5]。バームガードナーはマントル対流の問題の解決のために設計された有限要素コードTERRAの開発で知られている[6]。1994年、彼は地球物理学の学会で、地球を覆うプレートが現在の何千倍も速く移動した可能性があると発表した[2]。1997年、US News and World Reportは彼を「地球物理学的対流のためのコンピュータモデルの設計の世界有数の専門家」と紹介した[3]。
バームガードナーはキリスト教徒で、創造科学の研究も行っている。例えば、ノアの方舟の洪水をモデル化するためにTerraと呼ばれるコンピュータシミュレーションを作成した[1][3]。
1985年、バームガードナーはアマチュア考古学者ロン・ワイアット、サルベージの専門家デヴィッド・ファソルドとともにトルコのドゥルプナー・サイトで、ファソルドが聖書に記載されたノアの方舟の遺跡だとした物の再調査を行った[7]。バームガードナーは、箱舟型の物体を発見したというワイアットとファソルドの主張を支持しなかった。彼は、その物体は自然に形成された物であると主張した[8][9]。
