ジョージ・サンタヤーナ

ジョージ・サンタヤーナ（George Santayana、1863年12月16日 - 1952年9月26日）はスペイン出身のアメリカの哲学者・詩人である。

本名はホルヘ・アグスティン・ニコラス・ルイス・デ・サンタヤーナ・イ・ボラス（Jorge Agustín Nicolás Ruiz de Santayana y Borrás）。

生涯

1863年にスペインのマドリードで生まれ、1872年にアメリカに移住してボストン・ラテン・スクールとハーバード大学で哲学者ウィリアム・ジェームズなどから教育を受けた。1907年からハーバード大学で哲学の教授に就任し、1912年からフランスやイタリアへ移っている。ヘーゲル的観念論の立場から哲学、美学の研究者として著作や論文を発表している。晩年はイタリアで過ごし、1952年9月26日にローマで没。
