ニューヨーク州ポキプシー出身。父親は映画プロデューサーのジョン・クリスチャン・プラマー、母親は女優のメイア・ゲスト[1][2]。
2010年に子役としてデビュー。2011年からテレビドラマ『ボードウォーク・エンパイア 欲望の街』に出演して注目される[3]。2017年に映画『荒野にて』に主演、第74回ヴェネツィア国際映画祭マルチェロ・マストロヤンニ賞を受賞した[4][5]。ほかに映画『ゲティ家の身代金』のジョン・ポール・ゲティ3世役で知られる[6][7]。
