チャールズ・バーネス

チャールズ・リード・バーネス（Charles Reid Barnes、1858年9月17日 - 1910年2月24日）は、アメリカ合衆国の植物学者である。「光合成」(photosynthesis) という用語の確立に役割を果たした。

略歴

インディアナ州のマディソン郡に生まれた。ハーバード大学で植物学を学び、学校の教師をした後、1882年にパデュー大学の植物学の教授となった。1887年にウィスコンシン大学の教授となり、1898年からシカゴ大学の植物生理学の教授を務めた。専門は植物生態学で、コケ類と高等植物の共生などを研究した。植物生理学の分野でも光合成研究のパイオニアの一人である。1893年の学会で、それまで‘assimilation'（同化，吸収の意）などの用語が使われていた、植物の「光合成」作用に、'Photo syntax'または'photosynthesis'の語を使うことを提案し、'photosynthesis'の用語が一般的に使われるようになった。

アメリカ植物生物学会（American Society of Plant Biologists）はバーネスの功績を記念して、Charles Reid Barnes Life Membership Awardを設けた。
