ニシン科
ニシン科（Clupeidae）はニシン目の科の一つ。世界のほとんどの海域に分布し、水産資源、食用魚として極めて重要な存在である。口は体の先端にあるか、やや上向きについている。歯の発達は悪く、プランクトン食性。少数の例外を除き、腹部に稜鱗をもつ。多くの種類は体長25cm未満。

- Ehiravini - 成体でも9cmを超えない小型のグループ。インド太平洋の淡水-汽水域に生息する。漁業的価値は低い[2]。

- Sundasalanx - 7種。かつて独立科としてキュウリウオ目に含められていたこともあった[2]。体は細長く、鱗がない。胸鰭には鰭条がない。

かつての体系では本科は次の6亜科に分けられていたが、2014年に上の4亜科に再編された。
- ウルメイワシ亜科 Dussumieriinae - 4属12種。ウルメイワシ・キビナゴなどが所属する。W字型をした腹部稜鱗が特徴。
- Sundasalanginae - 1属7種。体は細長く、鱗がない。胸鰭には鰭条がない。
- Pellonulinae - 23属44種からなり、そのほとんどが西アフリカの湖や河川に分布する淡水魚である。上主上顎骨は1つで、腹鰭の前後には稜鱗がない場合が多い。
- ニシン亜科 Clupeinae - 16属72種。上主上顎骨は2つあり、腹鰭の前後に稜鱗をもつ。
- ニシンダマシ亜科（アロサ亜科）Alosinae - 7属31種。口は端位にあり、上顎に明瞭な溝をもつ。
- コノシロ亜科（ドロクイ亜科）Dorosomatinae - 6属22種。口は下向きについている。背鰭の最後の鰭条が糸状に細長く伸びる場合が多い。
