ハロルド・バウアー

ハロルド・バウアー（Harold Victor Bauer、1873年4月28日 - 1951年3月12日）は、イギリス出身のピアニスト、ヴァイオリニストである。

略歴

ロンドン生まれ。父親はドイツ人のヴァイオリニストで、母親はイギリス人であった。父親とアドルフ・ポリッツァーにヴァイオリンを師事し、10歳の時にヴァイオリニストとしてロンドンでデビュー。その後9年間イギリス国内で演奏旅行をする。1892年にパリへ行き、イグナツィ・パデレフスキに1年間ピアノを学ぶが、その頃はまだヴァイオリンへの関心を捨てていなかった。この時パデレフスキは、バウアーに対してピアノに専念することを強く勧め、さらに冗談交じりで「君は美しい髪の持ち主だから、ピアニストになるべきだ」と言ったという。1893年、パリでピアニストとして、ディーリアスの《ヴァイオリンソナタロ短調》を初演する（ヴァイオリンはアチル・リヴァー（Achille Rivarde））[1][2]。

1893年から94年にかけ、ロシア全土を演奏旅行する。続くフランス主要都市でのリサイタルはバウアーに名声をもたらし、フランス・ドイツ・スペインへの演奏旅行の契約を勝ち取った。この3国での演奏は彼の評判をさらに高めることとなり、活動範囲をヨーロッパ全土からアメリカにまで広げることとなった。

1908年12月18日、バウアーはパリで、ドビュッシーの《子供の領分》を初演した。彼はその後アメリカに定住し、同地でベートーヴェン協会を設立した。

その後、バウアーはマンハッタン音楽学校の主任教師となった。彼のマスタークラスは有名で、現在同校では最も有望な学生に対し、「ハロルド・バウアー賞」が贈られている。

評価

バウアーとリサイタルを行ったヴァイオリニストのジャック・ティボーは「とても満足できた」と語っている[3]。
