北アイルランド・アーマー出身[2]。1964年にロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニーに加入。1966年に「マルキ・ド・サドの演出のもとにシャラントン精神病院患者たちによって演じられたジャン＝ポール・マラーの迫害と暗殺」で第20回トニー賞演劇助演男優賞を受賞[1][3][4][5]、映画・テレビドラマでも活躍した。
