形態・生態
英名の 'spectacled' は下瞼が透明であることに因んだもので、瞼を閉じたまま物を見ることができる。また、この瞼は可動性である。
鱗が滑らかであるため、外見はトカゲ科のトカゲに似る。だが実際はテユー科と近縁であり、共にテユー上科 Teiioidea を構成する。総じて小型であり、多くの種で脚が退化する。他のトカゲと対照的に、前脚よりも後脚の退化傾向が強い[1]。
中南米に生息し、砂漠・山岳・熱帯雨林など様々な環境に進出している。だが多くの種は林床を好み、木や石の下などの湿った場所に潜む。
夜行性か、終日断続的に活動する。昆虫などの小型無脊椎動物を食べ、全種が卵生である。逃走のために水中に潜る種もいる[1]。
