2017年のゲイ・青春・恋愛・ドラマ映画『君の名前で僕を呼んで』でプロデューサーの1人を務め、第90回アカデミー賞作品賞の候補者となったことで知られる[2][4]。スピアーズはまた論争を呼んだパロディ短編映画『Ernest and Bertram』（2002年）で監督を務めた。この映画は『セサミストリート』のキャラクターであるバートとアーニーを同性愛者として描いており、後にスピアーズはセサミワークショップから著作権侵害で訴えられて公開停止に追い込まれた[5][6]。他にテレビシリーズ『Nightmare Café』と『John from Cincinnati』の製作に協力した[7]。
生い立ちと私生活
ミズーリ州カンザスシティで生まれ、オーバーランドパークで育った[2]。ユダヤ系の家庭で育った[8][9]。夫のブライアン・スワードストロムはタレントエージェント、映画プロデューサーであり、2人はニューヨーク州アセンズに住んでいる。また2人はカリフォルニア州ランチョ・ミラージュとニューヨークに家を所有している[1][10]。
