リオン・ウェアやワー・ワー・ワトソンが参加した『Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite』でデビュー。200万枚以上を売り上げる。2作目『Embrya』ではソウルの影響にとどまらないアート・ロック的とも評されるアルバムを作り上げる。3作目『Now』で初のチャート全米1位を獲得する。音楽セールス全般が下降する中で8年ぶりの4作目かつ3連作の1作目『BLACKsummers'night』もチャート全米1位、100万枚を売り上げている。
作風
当初1作目ではマーヴィン・ゲイのフォロワーとしての要素が大きくクローズアップされたが、2作目以降はソウル以外の影響も咀嚼している。ただし、歌詞のテーマとしてはいわゆるラブ・マンとして女性を賛美して愛するソウルの伝統に則っている。バース・コーラス・バースといった古典的な歌唱ではなく、グルーブと反応する歌唱が持ち味である。
