マリオ・サビオ

アメリカのニューヨークで、イタリア系アメリカ人の父のもとに生まれた。サビオの両親は敬虔なカトリック教徒であり、サビオを司祭に育てることを考えていた。[2]

1964年10月から、バークレイ校内のフリースピーチ運動に参加し始め、12月2日にはSproul Plazaで約4000人を前にして演説を行った。しかし、大学当局が、学内での政治活動を禁止したためサビオを含めフリースピーチ運動に参加していた多くの若者がのちに逮捕等されることとなった[3][4]。これについてサビオは『大学という巨大機構が我々を無視して醜く動くならば、我々は身を呈してその動きを阻止せねばならない。この機構を支配する人々にはこう告げるのだ!自由を与えないなら大学の機能を停止させると。』

運動は大学本部の占拠に至るまでになった。以下、サビオの演説より。

この夏、僕は公民権運動に参加するため、南部のミシシッピーへ行った。秋を迎えた今、僕は同じ闘争の別の局面にいる。今度はバークレーで。僕たちはミシシッピーで組織化された現状維持勢力に直面したが、その状況はバークレーでも変わらない。我が大学の総長によれば、大学とは、アメリカの産業ないし政府が養成する一定の製品を生み出す工場だ、というのである。そして、言論の自由を許せば現状が改革され兼ねない所から、大学は言論を検閲せざるを得ないという。それは暗澹たる光景といっていい。だが・・・、50年代の長い無関心時代を経てきた後に、今や学生たちは疑問を発するにとどまらず、その解答を自ら実行するまでになってきている。
