球冠
球冠(英語ではspherical cap, spherical domeやspherical segment of one baseという)とは、平面により切断された球の一部のこと。平面が球の中心を通り、球冠の高さが球体の半径と等しいときには半球となる。

体積と表面積
球冠の体積と曲面の面積は、次の値を組み合わせることで計算できる。

応用
2つの交差する球の和集合と交差部の体積

平行な平板で囲まれた部分の表面積
2つの平行な平板で囲まれた球台の表面積は、それぞれの球冠の表面積の差である。半径で高さが と の球冠の場合、表面積は
であり、地理座標である緯度 と を用いると[6]
となる。例えば、地球を半径6371 kmの球と仮定すると、北極(2016年8月現在、北極圏である緯度66.56°より北[7])の表面積は、2π·63712|sin 90° − sin 66.56°| = 2104万km2で、地球の総表面積の0.5·|sin 90° − sin 66.56°| = 4.125%である。
この式を用いることで、地球の表面積の半分が南緯30°と北緯30°の間にあることを示すことができる。この範囲は熱帯を包含する。
