この酵素の基質は7α-ヒドロキシコレスト-4-エン-3-オン、NADPH、H+とO2で、生成物は7α,12α-ジヒドロキシコレスト-4-エン-3-オン、NADP+とH2Oである。
組織名は7α-hydroxycholest-4-en-3-one,NADPH:oxygen oxidoreductase (12α-hydroxylating)で、別名に7α-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one 12α-monooxygenase、CYP12、sterol 12α-hydroxylase (ambiguous)、HCO 12α-hydroxylaseがある。
